Get Your Hands On This!

Just out in the last couple of weeks, the
highly anticipated newbie from Elito Revé Y
Su Charangon - Fresquecito. And it is the
sweetest thing. Regulars on the London
Cuban scene will recognise and adore
Ya No
Te Doy Mas Na'
(audio), Fresquecito.com
(audio)
and possibly El Teléfono from their
dance floor outings over the last 9 months
or so - but there are many other superb slices of music, including
some beautiful changüi.

Indeed, it is this musical form, predecessor of the son montuno, that
Elito and other groups, notably Sur Caribe
(last CD review), have
dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, adding a
distinctive new flavour to the timba palate.

Elito's Charangon is something of a Cuban musical institution, having
been around for fifty years, the first significant chunk of that under
the direction of Elito's papa, Elio. In that time many stunningly
innovative musicians have passed through its ranks including none
other than the Juan Formell & 'Pupy' Cesar Pedroso who left and went
on to form El Tren - the mighty Los Van Van.

Anyway, enough with the history already! Basically, if you love modern
Cuban music, then this CD is a must have.
